Lastlight

Lastlight is a coastal settlement built upon a chain of rocky islands and narrow peninsulas along the southern shores of Yesteryn. Nearly surrounded by water on all sides, the town sits where the sea and sky seem to blend together, creating an ever-present sense of distance and reflection. It is one of the most isolated settlements in Aeonyra, yet also one of the most beautiful, known for its endless horizons, sea-worn cliffs, and lingering twilight.

The settlement is connected by a network of stone bridges, elevated walkways, and weathered causeways that span the channels separating its districts. Homes cling to cliffsides overlooking the water, while lantern towers rise from rocky outcroppings to guide vessels through the region's unpredictable coastal fog. During high tide, portions of the lower pathways disappear beneath the waves, leaving sections of the town seemingly adrift upon the sea.

Life in Lastlight revolves around the ocean. Fishermen, navigators, lighthouse keepers, and chroniclers make up much of the population, their livelihoods shaped by the rhythms of the tides and the mysteries of the waters that surround them. The people possess a deep respect for memory and history, believing that the sea preserves stories just as surely as it erodes stone.

At the center of the settlement stands the Beacon of Lastlight, a towering lighthouse built upon the highest island in the chain. Its radiant lantern can be seen for miles across the water and serves as both a navigational landmark and a symbol of perseverance. Generations of keepers have maintained its flame, ensuring it never goes dark, even during the fiercest storms.

The surrounding waters are among the strangest in Yesteryn. Sailors often report seeing distant shorelines that vanish upon approach, unfamiliar stars reflected upon calm seas, or phantom vessels gliding silently across the horizon before dissolving into mist. During The Lost Hour, entire stretches of ocean can appear frozen in time, their waves suspended motionless for only a few fleeting moments.

The sea itself seems deeply connected to the lingering temporal scars of The Sunder. Bottles occasionally wash ashore containing letters written decades ago—or decades from now. Weather patterns sometimes repeat with uncanny precision, and certain coves are known to echo sounds from long-forgotten days. While outsiders find these phenomena unsettling, the people of Lastlight accept them as naturally as the tides.

To outsiders, Lastlight feels like the edge of the world. To its people, it is something else entirely: a place where the sea holds the memories of ages past, and where every sunset serves as a reminder that endings are not always final.
